E-votional - Rock & Hard Place
September 9, 2002
Verse:

"They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us, bringing us out of Egypt? Is this not the very thing we told you in Egypt, ‘Let us alone and let us serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness."

Genesis 14:11-12 (NRSV)

Thought:

Work and play. Relationships and strangers. Success and failure. Family and Friends. They can bring us to this place, this place of being between a rock and a hard place. And, it is when we find our selves at this place, that we encounter it, if just for a split second, we encounter fear. It is this fear that leads us to make a decision of action. It is at this point that we find out where it is we have our faith and our foundation. Here we find what exactly is the Rock and what is the hard place.

Hear the Good News, no matter where we go, what we experience and how we feel, God is there and a very real help. When the Israelites found themselves between the Red Sea and Pharaoh's army, they forgot where it was that came from or who it was they belonged to. How could they know exactly how it was all going to play out? Could they have guessed the sea would part? But instead of looking toward God, they pointed their finger and directed their anger toward Moses. But how could they have known? How could they have known the sea was to be parted? The fact is they could not, but they could have faced the fear, with God by their side, the same one who had brought them out of Egypt. The same God who "went in front of them in a pillar of cloud by day, to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light, so that they might travel by day and by night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people." Yet, forgot because they were afraid. They were between a rock and a hard place. But God still provided for them and delivered them. Don't lose sight of your pillar of fire or pillar of cloud leading you as you walk through life in search of Your promised land.

Prayer:

Gracious Father, thank You for strength and deliverance. Help me stand secure in my faith as I face the seas and armies in my life. Allow me to not only be reminded of Your steadfast presence, but to offer reminders to others of Your faithful love and care for each one of us. Thank You for all that You have done in my life and all You will continue to do, for ask this through Christ, my Lord and Savior. Amen.
