E-votional - Eyes On God
January 22, 2002
Verse:

"He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD."

Psalm 40:3 (NRSV)

Thought:

Reading a devotional, the idea was suggested that one of the greatest barriers to recognizing and seeking God's direction and blessing was in fact the blessings of God. When we are in times of trouble, we immediately turn to God, but when we are surprised by the blessings of God, we focus on the act rather than the actor.

Hear the Good News, blessings are reminders of God's goodness and of presence. Blessings allow us to keep our eyes on God. The blessings in my life, my family, my faith, my friends, they point to and are glimpses of God. Sure, when things get hairy, we turn to God, then thanking Him afterwards for His help, but what his surprise blessings, those no-brainers (apparent that it has come from God), and the simple warmth of the Son. These to call us, and should not distract us from God. Recently, we have found out that we are expecting a second child, a surprise blessing and at the same time a "no-brainer". Amy and I both know where this has come from. I will now have even more visual reminders of where to keep my eyes fixed. Thanks be to God.

Prayer:

Gracious Father, You give me vision to see with my eyes and my heart. Help me to focus on You in such a way that the important, Jesus Christ, becomes the focal point of my eyes and my heart. Because it is when I focus on You, my selfishness and self desires are removed, allowing me to see the blessing I have received, and embracing them, and living for You. Thank You for all that You have done in my life and all You will continue to do, for I ask this through Christ, my Lord and Savior. Amen.
